A retrospective fly-behind-the-drums view of our rehearsal process last week.

What I like is that we didn’t do what we discuss here at all, in the end.

Man, Kraak was a blast. We think we played the best gig we’ve ever played, ever.

Massive thanks to all who came, and to Dayse & Aver for some quality support. Props to Simon Webbon for spinning some vinyl on the night too.

We kinda wish every night was like last night… Big love, The EE xx

First night of the Stay Straight Tour hit the Musiquarium Leeds last night. Massive thanks to everyone who came down. Biblical rain, super-long journey & stressful soundcheck but amazing audience, great venue and we had a blast.

Great final rehearsal last night - we all kinda surprised ourselves at how well running the set went. Totally pumped for tonight’s first leg of the tour at Leeds Musiquarium. See you there! Here’s a little sneak peak at what it will sound like…

Rehearsal Day #2.

Things went really well with this rehearsal. We powered through most of the material we’ve got to do (8 tunes is a lot in such a short space of time), and I think we all relaxed and started to have fun with it.

The string section are unbelievably quick when picking up ideas, and so imaginative. They’ve really connected with our music, which is something very humbling.

Ben our sound engineer has hired some wicked mics, which really helped with the strings too.

Wednesday is the final day, then we’re off to Leeds to start the tour!

The Electronic Exchange – Country Murder Rehearsal (Mon 6th Feb 2012)
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Country Murder is probably one of the most intense recordings we’ve made, but finding a live version that works is something Najia and I have always struggled with.

Its turns out its really tough to get right with the full live band too - but after a lot of hard work this evening we’re getting there… we think.

I had an idea for the vocals - to perhaps build them up towards the end. adding layers. Always keeping the low energy vibe of it but eventually leading to an overkill of vocals so it sounds like a hum (Dave and I did this once and it sounded really cool). It might then sound a bit hypnotic and sleep like…
– From Najia on our electronic exchange. If you come to the gig, guess which song we were talking about…
One of my photos has been used for a bands tour. Check them out, they’re pretty cool.

Country Murder (it’s not a true story)!

The most recent song to be rehearsed, Country Murder is a ballad about a woman found at the side of the road with blood on her hands. When approached, she tells the story:

It was a dark day when I first saw her sitting there

Down on her knees, blood on her hands and in her hair

She said (she said, she said)

Won’t you help me? I can’t go home

I said what happened who didn’t keep you near?

She said, I caught my man cheating so I killed him then and there

She said uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh

Won’t you help me? I can’t go home

Country Murder

I said how did it get this way, how did it get so bad?

She said very quietly, “He was all I had” and

“Now my body’s in shreds and my mind’s not far behind

And his soul’s with mine anyway, so he’s better off dead

Country murder

Country murder

She said violence breeds violence, we reached our climax, nowhere to go

I tried to tell him, tried to warn him, he was getting far too low

Now the police are following me, now they’re following me and I can’t go home”

I said, “I’ll cover for you, go clean your face and get used to being alone”

Get used to being alone

Get used to being alone

Get used to being alone

Get used to, get used to, get get used to, being alone

Country Murder

Oh (repeated)

Country murder

Country murder

Country murder

Country murder

He went too far

He went too far

He went too far so I killed him dead

Get used to being alone (repeated)
